'Traces' An Exhibition held at The Bridewell Theatre, London

by Rebecca Jeffreys

Kingston University’s art students hosted a free three-day art exhibition in the Bridewell Theatre, London, St Pauls, a space that was formerly a swimming pool in the 60’s. Students, Ella Johnson, Katie South, Laura Pykett, Monica Nutautaite, Evie McGuckian Jones and Simona Kent-saisch used the resonance of the pool, placed under the stage, to hold their show.

An estimated 150 people turned up throughout the open day, which took place on March 4, from 12pm to 6pm. People helped themselves to free drinks and enjoyed the artwork. On each of the following days, an average of 60 people attended the show.

Ella Johnson, 20, said: “It has benefited us hugely. Planning an exhibition completely on our own in our first year has thrown us in the deep end but we’ve gained skills in organisation, time keeping, responsibility and team work.”

The exhibition was a success and the students are eager to do it again. All Kingston University art students were assigned to find a place that would fit their theme and explain how the pieces fit together.

Laura Pykett, 20, said: “We set our work around the theme of traces [of the past] to fit with the Bridewell Theatre, as it was once used for a different function but it still holds the same formation. This has made us all interested to do it again.”
